Sexual Harassment Lawsuit by 18 Women Settles for $1.5 Million

A sexual harassment lawsuit filed by 18 female employees in New York settled for $1.5 million this week. According to an article by NNY360, the attorney general of NY was quoted as saying that this was “the state’s first-ever sexual harassment settlement in the construction industry.” The sexual harassment was alleged to have taken place at Trade Off LLC, with sexual harassment being particularly focused against the women of color. The sexual harassment that the women alleged included multiple cases of sexual, physical and verbal assault. When the female employees reported this alleged egregious sexual harassment, the construction company Trade Off did nothing in response. In the same article the Attorney General Lelita James, who served as the sexual harassment lawyer in this case, expressed that every employee “has the right to report [sexual harassment] or misconduct,” which is true in both New York, in Washington, and across the country.

The company allegedly fired at least 12 of the employees for reporting the sexual harassment. The managers allegedly demanded sexual acts for pay and overtime, which would be considered sexual harassment even if the the only interactions were verbal. Unfortunately, some of the sexual harassment went even further and included sexual assault. Former employee Jaleesa McCrimmon alleged that she was “sexually assaulted by a co-worker at a work site and endured continuous verbal and sexual harassment on the job.”

Ultimately, the case settled in court for a total of $1.5 million. Sexual harassment in the workplace is against the law and this case demonstrates that employees may be entitled to significant financial compensation if it is faced.
